Essential Digital Skills Level 1
Course Introduction
In this section, we discuss how the course works and what you need to do to complete the course and gain your qualification certificate. The course is divided into sections and you complete these in order and then there is a summary video before you take your test. Once passed you can download your completion certificate, Evidenced-based Learning statement and Certified CPD statement.
Computers and Laptops
When working on computers you need to set up your computer and displays to the optimum position to avoid you getting injuries, just the same as if you were at work. Where you work is also important as working on a sofa with a laptop can cause painful injuries that are hard to treat. This section looks at the position of your computer and ensuring that the keyboard and displays are in the best position. It also looks at mobile device safety.
We also look at the parts of a computer and other items like printers.
The Internet
The internet is a vital part of using your computer. In this section, we look at the internet, discuss what a web address is looked at how you can connect your mobile phone to your computer if you need access away from a wired source. We also look at some websites that you can use to get information and what they offer.
Setting up your Email
Email is the prefered way of communicating with individuals and businesses. It offers an instant way of sending messages or files anywhere in the world in seconds. In this section, we look at how to set up your own email and the basics of how to use email effectively whether for work or for your personal communications.
Social Media
Social media is accessible from your computer, phone or tablet and it is a great way to communicate with family and friends. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube offer different ways to communicate and gain information. We look at opening accounts and getting started setting up your profile.
Windows Basics
In this section, we look at the basics of using a Windows computer and some simple tasks you can do to get the most out of your computer.
Using Apple Mac Computers
Apple Mac computers have a different operating system from a Windows machine. Many features are the same but the layout is different so even if you do not use an Apply computer, it is good to learn about them.
Mobile Devices
Using computers and staying in touch is not limited to a fixed computer or laptop, Now there are many different types of mobile smartphones and tablets offering an easy way of accessing the internet, running programs or apps and playing games.
Unit One - Using Devices and Handing Information
This is the first unit of the Essential Digital Skills qualifications. Here we look at using devices and the handling of information. This includes working with searching the internet, using images, file sizes and improving your search results.
Unit Two - Creating and Editing
This is the second unit of the Essential Digital Skills qualifications. We look at creating and editing on your computer or mobile device. We look at common programs in word processing, spreadsheets and other programs to enhance your computer use.
Unit Three - Communicating
This is the third unit of the Essential Digital Skills qualification. There are many different ways to communicate online and we look at the types of communication you will be using. Video meetings and calls are a common way of keeping in touch at work and with your family and friends. This was increased during the Coronavirus lockdowns and allowed people to keep in touch with family, friends sn and customers. We look at using systems like Zoom to make effective video meetings.
Unit Four - Transacting
This is the fourth unit of the Essential Digital Skills qualification. Here we look at transcribing and it includes external drives, entering your data in a safe way and other simple ways of using computers and the internet.
Unit Five - Being Safe and Responsible Online
This is the fifth and final unit of the Essential Digital Skills qualification. Here we look at being safe and responsible online. There are many ways your data and financial information can be used by criminals to get your identity and take money from you or take out loans in your name. Here we also cover some common internet scams and fraud attempts you may come across and how to keep safe from this ever-evolving threat.
Shopping Online
Part of the Essential Digital Skills qualification includes a test with the awarding organisation in using an online store. In this section we look at the basics of buying a product online in a safe way.
Course Summary
In the summary section, we tell you how to take your test and access your certificate if you pass the test. You can review any video before you take your test if you want to refresh your knowledge. You can take the test as many times as you need to and we use an adaptive testing system so no two people get the same test in the same order. You must pass every section but if you are close to passing a section, our system will ask a few more to give you a chance of passing.
